Tourism in ANSE

ANSE in Le Pays des Pierres Dorées (golden stone country)

The commune is part of "Beaujolais des Pierres Dorées".
A picturesque small town set on the confluence of the Azergues and Saône Rivers.
The oldest evidence of human presence here go back to Palaeolithic and Neolithic times.

Bronze and ceramic artefacts found at Bourdelan, to the north of Anse near the Saône ford, confirm that there was a settlement here.
In Antonin’s itinerary “Asa Paulini”, the Roman name for Anse, gets a mention. On the east facing slopes of the commune lots of Gallo-Roman vestiges have been discovered. There is a very big Roman Villa with a gallery façade that was decorated with mosaics, one of which was had a nautical theme.

In the town centre is a 6th century castrum which houses the antique Chapelle Saint-Cyprien and ‘Salle d’Anse’.
In the parish church there are fragments of epitaphs, in 498 a 5 year old child called Proba, in 523 a lady called Vistrigilde, in 524 Viligisclus who was killed at Vézéronce.

An of 982 united Lyon with Anse. The Château des Tours was the headquarters of the juristiction of the Lyon Cannon Counts who were named “Barons d’Anse”.
In 1179 it was recorded as “in castro et burgo”. The castrum had grown to a town. Saint-Romain church, which disappeared in 1752, was the seat of many councils. In the parish church, which today has been rebuilt, the holy healers, Saint-Abdon et Saint-Senen were celebrated

The bridge was built by edict from Louis XI.
An edict from Louis XI and a title deed dated 1260 tell us of the ‘rights and usage of the public oven’.
The 12th and 15th century hospitals were made up of a main building equipped with a few beds adjoining a simple chapel. There is a cross to mark the place where Saint-Romain is supposed to have been. Near the bridge was Saint-Martin of which a bas relief called Saint Cri and a few column parts remain.
Château de Saint-Trys belonged to the Scarrons.
Château du Jonchay is one of the oldest (1326).
Château de La Fontaine was built in an end of 16th century style.
Brienne monastery was used first by the order of Saint-Damien, then by the Clarisses, followed by the order of Saint-Benoît.
The aligning of the main road in 1800 and the bombardments of September 1944 meant that the northern and eastern parts of Anse lost their old town features.
Napoleon stopped off her on his ways back from the Isle of Elba on 13th March 1815.
Part of the town that was bombarded on 28th August 1944, was rebuilt between 1947/50..

Things to explore !

CHATEAU DES TOURS: a Mediaeval fortified castle (1213/1218) built by Renaud de Forez to defend the northern Beaujolais border.
Built out of local limestone, the castle includes a cylindrical keep, a semi-circular tower and a rectangular central building. Inside are a Gallo-Roman mosaic, a small archaeological museum, a great hall, a prison (no longer used) and a hoarding (wooden structure at the top of the tower).
Seguin de Badefol, Leader of the ‘Tard-Venus’ (late commers), seized the town in 1364 and moved into the Château des Tours.

The Church and its 21st century spire:
This fortified town belonged to the archbishops of Lyon from 11th century who built a fortress there. 8 councils were held in the Anse church, which was founded before 10th century.
Then,
SAINT-PIERRE was built in 1858 using white stone from Lucenay (just 5km from): the inside of the sacristy dates from the end of the 15th century and a window set into the west wall (IMH).
The remains of 6th century Saint-Cyprien church. Saint-Cri Bas-relief, from Saint-Martin chapel , which disappeared in 17th century during a flood.
This building was bombed on 4th September 1944: the spire was destroyed.
In 1957 architects from Lyon and Villefranche, Louis Weckerlin and Gabriel Groussole rebuilt the spire using reinforced concrete.
In the autumn of  1995, the crumbling reinforced spire was demolished.
In 1997, 33 architectural practices answered the tender for a new spire sent out by the Municipality. In 1998 the Municipal Council unanimously voted for Philippe Allart, an architect from Lyon.

A work group bringing together Municipal Councilors, members of the Parish Council and the architect set about working on a project for the spire.
In August 2005, the new spire, weighing in at 23 metric tons was placed using a self-propelled crane in the specially created setting.
Since then the spire has become a visual drawing point both in and outside the town. The different veils and the metal mesh infrastructure are shown in different lights by day and by night.

VOIE DE 38
The particularity of this 2.5km rail line is that the gauge is 38cm (or 15 inches).
On it are ¼ scale reproductions of SNCF (French rail) engines and rolling stock built by members of the association.
At the moment they are finishing a wonderful steam engine and tender... this is unique for 38cm gauge, see it in the workshop!
